What is Odoo

Odoo is an open-source suite of business management applications (ERP) that covers the core areas of a company: sales, accounting, inventory, manufacturing, human resources, marketing, website and more than 50 additional applications, all integrated on a single database.

The difference compared to using several independent tools is that in Odoo information flows between modules natively: a sale automatically generates the delivery in inventory, the invoice in accounting and the update in the CRM, without exporting or entering anything by hand.

Odoo started as an open-source project in Belgium and today is one of the most widely used business management platforms in the world, with millions of active users and a developer community of more than 100,000 contributors worldwide.

How it is organized: Community vs. Enterprise

Odoo is distributed in two editions:

  • Odoo Community: the open-source, free version, with the basic features of each application.
  • Odoo Enterprise: includes additional applications, hosting infrastructure, official support, managed version upgrades and advanced features (AI automations, advanced financial reports, a full mobile app, among others).

Community is the core on which Enterprise is built, so a company can start on one edition and migrate to the other as its needs grow.

Odoo charges a single subscription per user that includes all applications, with no extra charges per app or for data volume. If your company only needs one application, you can stay on that version for free, with unlimited users.

What Odoo is for: modules by area

Finance

Accounting, electronic invoicing, expense management, bank reconciliation and digital document signing. It covers everything from day-to-day accounting operations to consolidated financial reports.

Sales and CRM

Tracking of sales opportunities, quotations, point of sale (physical and online), subscriptions and rentals. The CRM is directly connected to invoicing and inventory.

Website and e-commerce

Website builder, online store, blog, forum and live chat, with the catalog and inventory synchronized in real time with the rest of the operation.

Supply chain

Inventory, manufacturing (MRP), purchasing management, maintenance and quality control. It lets you plan production, control stock across multiple warehouses and automate replenishment.

Human resources

Employee management, recruitment, absence tracking, performance reviews and vehicle fleet management.

Marketing

Marketing automation, email and SMS marketing, event and survey management, all connected with CRM data.

Services

Project management, timesheets, field service, helpdesk and appointment scheduling.

Productivity

Internal messaging, approvals, calendar, VoIP, knowledge management and WhatsApp integration.

What kind of company Odoo is for

Odoo is designed to scale: a one-user company can start with a single application (for example, invoicing) and activate additional modules as it grows, up to operations with thousands of users and multiple countries or companies within the same group.

This makes it relevant both for small businesses looking to leave Excel and isolated systems behind, and for mid-sized and large companies with multi-company, multi-country operations or with manufacturing, distribution or service processes that require end-to-end visibility.

Odoo’s technical advantages

  • Everything in a single database: information is not duplicated or manually synchronized between systems.
  • Open data: Odoo runs on PostgreSQL, an industry-standard database, which avoids data lock-in to proprietary formats.
  • Modularity: only the applications the company needs are activated, and more are added when the business requires it.
  • Extension ecosystem: more than 40,000 community applications extend industry-specific functionality.
  • Cloud security: your information is always encrypted in transit and at rest, backed up every day and stored in several different places in case one fails. In addition, each company’s data is completely separated from that of any other customer. If your company is used to having its own servers, having this in the cloud usually gives you more protection with less maintenance work for your team.

How Odoo is implemented in a company

Implementing Odoo involves mapping the company’s current processes, defining which modules to configure and how, migrating historical data without losing traceability, integrating with the systems that already exist and training the teams that will use it every day. It is a process that requires methodology and a deep understanding of the business, not just technical knowledge of the software.

At Birtum we work through that process in five phases: Discovery (mapping the current operation and defining the scope), Blueprint (design of the future operation, with a technical-functional contract signed before building), Build (construction in sprints with periodic demos), Go Live & Hypercare (migration, training and priority support during the first 30 days) and Customer Success (ongoing support with quarterly value reviews).

Why consider a specialized partner

The value of Odoo appears when the configuration reflects how the company really operates: its flows, its exceptions and the way it grows. Designing that configuration well, from the start, is work for specialists who understand the business before touching the system.

We are the Odoo Gold Partner specialized in companies with high operational demands: 300+ implementations completed, 192 active clients in the region and 94% retention. We have our own offices in Spain, Mexico and Argentina, and a team of consultants in Brazil.

When processes grow, you need a partner that stays.
